A laptop is a small, portable computer which uses battery power to function and also has a “clam-shell” form factor. A laptop has all the units of a computer built in one portable, thin and lightweight device which serves all the functions a general desktop computer provides, but with more flexibility.
What does a laptop look like?
The laptop uses a clam-shell form factor which means that it has two equal portions of body that are connected by a middle point allowing the user to open it like a book. A thin LCD or LED is mounted on the upper lid of the clam shell, and the inside of the lower lid has an alphanumeric keyboard placed inside it. The outer side of the lid has different colors and logos imprinted on it according to the name of the laptop or the company’s name with has manufactured the laptop.
What is the purpose of a laptop?
The laptops are used as fully functional computers designed for convenience and portability. Laptops are smaller than desk top computers, are lightweight and consume less power.
They are designed for the purpose of using the computer from anywhere as they operate on battery, so there is no limitations. Just recharge the battery and take it anywhere with you.
These devices are named for their convenience of being able to be used by resting on the lap of a person without the need of a table or desktop.
How does a laptop work?
Like a desktop computer, laptop also needs a power source to run. They either run on their own battery or have to be plugged in a power outlet. You can use a laptop by placing it on a desk or either place it on a smooth flat surface such as floor, large cushion or just your lap.
Laptops allow you to connect them to separate monitor, keyboards or mouse to use them as a desktop computer if you want.
The parts and functions of a laptop:
Laptop computers consist of many parts such as, processors, mother boards, hard drives, graphic cards, memory sticks and interface devices. All of these parts are smaller in size than a normal sized desktop computer as the parts in laptop have to be made as such to be able to install in a portable device.
However, as the size decreases, these components don’t perform as better and fast as the large parts of a desktop computer.
These small portable computers require less power to work than desktop computers, but they also provide lower capabilities of intensive work than a large desktop computer.
Just like desktop computers, laptops also provide adjustable RAM and ROM. They also provide linking to other devices through selected ports, which allow you to connect to mobile phones, USB, projector, LEC/ LCD TV and many other external devices.
Types of laptop computers:
There are a lot of reasons why people buy and use laptops. Some features are universal in all laptops that allow the users to make a choice between them easily. But there are a number of specially designed features that are developed to target a certain niche.
Some people want laptops for storing vast data and while other use these devices to play game, the laptops are available in these categories in the market;
Value laptops are available at a low price range that provide low memory and storage to the user. These laptops also have low performing hardware that provide the customers with basic computing service. You can explore the internet, watch a movie and or do some office work with convenience on these laptops.
The everyday laptops provide the user with higher memory and storage facility. They also provide higher performance than value laptops. The everyday laptops allow the user to use them for school or college work or watching movies and Netflix but it doesn’t let you store 3D applications or gaming apps.
Gaming laptops have middle to high end graphic cards and vast range processors that allow the user to store and play graphically intensive games. These laptops, as they have highly efficient processors, provide with fast functioning. They also have high storage and memory facility than other laptops.
Professional laptops are the high end laptops that are targeted toward more professional customers. These laptops have high end graphic cards that are designed for studio uses such as, analyzing large amount of data, 3D graphic creation and rendering and other intensive professional work. These laptops have fast and highly efficient processors, more storage and more memory to handle professional workload.
Notebooks are smaller than laptops but are more expensive than computers and laptops. These devices are more sleet, stylish and lightweight than laptops but being smaller in size, the user has to compromise on performance, capabilities and peripheral ports.
